Converting local paths to UNC

Using UNC paths is essential to make sure that distributed rendering will work flawlessly. Below is a simple guide which will help with converting local paths (C:/textures/texture.jpg) to UNC (//ComputerName/textures/texture.jpg).


  1. Go to Utilities tab in 3ds Max (hammer icon)
  2. Click on "more..."
  3. Choose "Bitmap/Photometric paths" and press OK
  4. Click on "Edit Resources..."
  5. A window with all your assets visible should pop up
  6. Press "Strip All Paths"
  7. Select all your assets
  8. Press "Set Path"
  9. Point to the network location where the assets are stored


This should convert all local paths to UNC ones.
