Material editor is very slow / freezing in Corona 1.4

This solution applies to both Slate and Compact editors. The following symptoms can observed:

  • Material editor is very slow even in empty scenes, which makes it almost impossible to use it
  • Few of the sample slots load up quickly, then 3ds Max freezes for some time, then it loads another few sample slots, freezes again, etc...
  • Using the converter script also causes 3ds Max to freeze for some time
  • The problem does not appear when Corona 1.3 or older is installed

While we are not quite certain as to why this problem appears, the below solution seems to solve it. Please proceed exactly as instructed:

  1. Install all Windows Updates. This may require a few restarts. After your PC is restarted, check if there are no new updates on the list. If there are any - please also install them. The goal is to install all available Windows Updates so that there are none of them left on the list.

  2. Uninstall all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64 and x86)
    Go to Windows "Programs and Features", then find "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable" on the list, and uninstall all entries - both (x86) and (x64) ones.

  3. Restart your computer

  4. Install MSVC++ 2015 Redistributable (x64)
    Download link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

  5. Restart your computer

After following all the above instructions, run 3ds Max and check if the problem is solved. Usually it should take up to 2-3 seconds to load all the sample slots in the material editor, and there should be no freezes during the process.
